Effective Integrated Assessment and Training

When my son Fun Fun was in kindergarten K1, the school social worker noticed Fun Fun’s inclination to play alone and his slower development in self-care ability compared with other children of his age group. She suggested that Fun Fun should undergo a formal assessment, so I took him to see a pediatrician. The result of the pediatrician’s assessment was: Fun Fun had a mild autistic tendency. I was deeply depressed at such a result. In my sadness, I tried to pull myself together. As Fun Fun’s mother, I must find a way to help him. I learnt from the internet that intensive training, ABA training and sensory integration training are today’s effective ways of training children with autistic tendency, so I arranged for Fun Fun to attend those effective training programs. However, I remained downcast after a time, as I saw no noticeable improvement in Fun Fun.

One day, by chance, I found on the internet the name of Dr Jane Nam, educational psychologist of the Positive Life Association Ltd. (PLA). It gave me a wisp of hope to read the testimonies from parents of children having received help from Dr Nam. I decided that I might as well approach Dr Nam for help.

Dr Nam conducted an assessment of Fun Fun’s condition. The result was that Fun Fun has a propensity for micro thinking, he has a very good memory, and his learning ability verges on being “gifted”. This reminded me of an occasion when a teacher offered Fun Fun a choice of stickers, he selected small and unattractive ones rather than those that are big and beautiful. Dr Nam commented that Fun Fun would fit better in schools with activity based learning and teaching, so I arranged for him to transfer to a school of that category. Now a K2 student there, Fun Fun is evidently learning more happily than before, and his movement ability has improved.

I have greatly benefited from Dr Nam’s assessment and training of Fun Fun together with her suggestions for improving his learning ability. Furthermore, I am inspired by her positive life attitude. When I was at the end of my tether, Dr Nam pointed me to the direction of improving my son’s condition and helped me to see his strengths. I know that PLA is building a kindergarten.

I believe that such a school operating under Dr Nam’s educational philosophy will definitely be able to help many children with learning difficulties and their parents. How I wish Fun Fun could study at that school!

Dr Nam, thank you so much! I hope that your school would be successfully open soon!
